Cultural Awareness

Cultural humility

A process of learning to respect diverse values and differences while cultivating cultural humility. Grounded in insights from cross-cultural psychology and cultural anthropology, we explore these themes through mindfulness and compassion practices.

What we do

A workshop series exploring cultural differences and connecting perspectives between Japan and English-speaking cultures.

For: Companies, schools, educators, study-abroad organisations, language schools, and others working across cultures.

When working across cultures in education, business, study abroad, and other international settings, we may encounter confusion or psychological challenges that cannot be explained by language alone. Differences in values, expectations, and ways of communicating can shape how we understand ourselves and others.

Rather than viewing these differences simply as “right” or “wrong”, we explore the cultural backgrounds and values that shape them, creating opportunities to broaden our perspectives. We may also explore themes such as social justice, equity, and inclusion, which have become increasingly important in discussions in many English-speaking countries.

Drawing on insights from cross-cultural psychology and cultural anthropology, we also bring perspectives from mindfulness and compassion into the exploration. We develop greater flexibility in understanding and relating to different values, while also reflecting on our own cultural background. Through encounters with different cultures, we can deepen our understanding of ourselves as well as others. We explore not only differences in English and Japanese expressions and nuances, but also the ideas, values, and ways of communicating that lie behind language.

Ultimately, this is an opportunity to cultivate cultural humility — an ongoing willingness to recognise and respect diverse values and differences in an increasingly interconnected world.
